OK, here is another puzzle for the Russian-speaking community (especially for its "patriotic" fraction :)
Flew in from Miami Beach BOAC Didn't get to bed last night All the way the paper bag was on my knee Man, I had a dreadful flight... What is the next line? (don't google it!) |

The point is that it's clear what is it all about and still diffucult to "tailor" it in 1 or two words...))) |

That's exactly what I'm talking about :) And that's the main problem with translating titles (not only the film ones) - you know exactly what it's all about but it's hard to put it in a single word or a short statement. |

So you probably have at least a couple of books of Beatles lyrics at home. And you can use an a b s o l u t e l y legal cheat - "don't google" does not mean "don't check your bookshelf" - so you are in much better position than all others :)))
Let's wait until tomorrow, and if nobody else shows up - I'll give you the answer. |

Thank you gals. Unfortunately, my yacht is on a shipyard now, need some repair after my last round the world cruise. And I need a new peg leg, I used my old one to repair a mast after the hurricane. I'm also out of gin and scotch - and obviously can't cross the Pond sober. Maybe next time.

Oh, forgot to mention - my parrot is gone as well, a poor guy didn't survive the hurricane. I need a new one, and I need to train him to speak perfect English, including all words and idioms which you can't find in Oxford dictionary. I can't meet Her Majesty without a parrot, it would be a shocking etiquette violation. Please pass her my apologies.

From your other messages, of course. I don't remember the exact thread, but there were a couple of nice pics of your dog, big and white. If you add a saddle, spurs and bridle, you can start teaching kids (horse)back riding :))) |

Hello everybody! =)
Some time ago I asked you for some assistance to get prepared for level 4 icao (you shared with me some links for listening). So I'd like to say thank you much cause I've passed it! =) and even got one 5 in comprehension descriptor. As the next point, I gonna reinforce my efforts to achieve (may be, one day...) level 5. I have one more year to make it, as my graduation from the flight school is supposed to be by only next summer. I'd like to hope it's enough time for it (taking into account I spend on English not less then 5 hours a day). I noticed that asking help here brought a luck, so...=) May be some of you had the same experience in preparation for level 5 without teachers and courses (I simply dont have them here) and could give me some advise how to make it efficiently or just make it =) If are there some special recommendations? Or just to do what I did but better, quicker, reducing mistakes to zero? Honestly I am not even shure It's possible to do it in my state, I mean my opportunities for extra english. Anyway it would be a good motive to improve the language and keep it in a good condition. And thank you for your help again! =) |

Crosswind,
First of all - congratulations! Great job. And speaking of level 5 - correct me if I'm wrong, but from my best understanding it's not an aviation-specific English at all, but some kind of generic English. With level 5 you should be able to make an order in bar or restaraunt, pick up a girl, buy her a drink, talk to her about medieval English poetry and last Hollywood movies and so forth. Which means that you don't need any classes, trainings and all such bullshit - just some practice. Watch English movies, read English books, chat with us on this forum, find some English-speaking friends, and so forth. By the way - did you get a chance to read Hailey's "Airport" in English? It would be a good starting point. Or maybe any other English book which you read in Russian in the past (Robert Heinlein, Jack London, Tom Clancy, etc). Or watch "Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag", "Act of Valor", "The Hunger Games", "Mission Impossible V". Or just listen Beatles having their lyrics in hands. Or hundred and half other ways. Anyway - stay in touch and chat with us from time to time. Good luck! |

Well, this filter really pisses me off...
MSL, You would be surprised, but I could not appreciate "War and Peace" as well (to be honest, I hate it - thanks to my middle school and my teacher who required us to read 100 next pages by the next lesson). But I can read and understand it (or at least most of it - life changed dramatically since then, and some things, obvious for 19 century people, are hard to pick up now). |

My point is - on Level 5 you should be able not just to pass the exam, but use your English for everyday communication. And the best thing to bring you to this level - just watch, listen and read native English speakers, pick up the phrases, idioms, jokes, quotes and so forth.
