Mila, with news like that you'll scare away not only all visitors of this thread who are already terrified with written English, but airline passengers as well. :-)
As for profits of learning English, they are all well known. I wanted to tell about hidden profits. For example ability to visit English clubs and talk to to interesting people, get new acquaintances (with beautiful girls including ;-)). Let alone understanding your favourite old kind songs in English. |

How do you do? :)
Glad to set again the English Club to the due position in the forum list! Don’t be surprised to such clumsy greeting (especially in writing :) It’s merely the subject of my question to Mila. Is this “question that requires the same question to answer” still used in active English? Which situations (if any) are best for saying it ? So, Mila, give me please the brief “use guide” for this odd “hello”. |

Evening to all!
Hi, avia-beauty fan! Nice to see you.. -How do you do! -How do you do! If you a Member of Parliament (The house of Lords we are talking about) then this is very appropriate, as it is very formal. So when you are in a very formal situation, with those English snobs around you, then you are obliged to say that greeting. And it doesn't mean anything...There were quite funny situations when some people didn't understand the greeting itself and started telling the way they were...:-))) Other people and situations are less formal, that's why you coud hardly hear it from anyone..Quite the opposite you might send the wrong message to the company :-)) The above refers to British English...not quite sure about the American one :-) So the tarditional one "Hello/Hi" would be OK. |

Hello, everyone!
Mila, thanks for comprehensive use guide! The odd hello goes to “museum” :) It is seen by unaided eye that the motto you named runs through the thread and make it something more than just educational&chatting place. …My favorite season sets in. Early April. Someone may say: after-winter dirt, lack of vitamins, feeling sleepy after clock hour shift etc :) But I feel the different. The nature is in silent anticipation of blossoming. The attack of Green is ready but has not started yet. But attack of Light is on the peak! Sunny days with that light evenings are wonderful. The early April in the year is like Friday evening in the week. Or age of 17 in the life. Everything wishful is closely ahead :)… |

Hi, avia-beauty fan,
You are more a poet than a fan, I would say:-)) I quite agree with you. To put the words into practice have just stopped for a cup of tea after going "green":-)- tiding up a garden is my favourite and only pleasnat duty in the household. The birds are singing, saw a bumble bee already, daffodils and grape hyacinths are in bloom, the sun is shining brightly and the sky is that special spring blue colour!! What a wonderful time and world! Is that the picute near your place? I wish so... |

Hello, everybody!:)
Mila you are lucky to have your own little garden:)It looks like a perfect way to stay close to nature, even if you live in a town. To get to my dacha I need a couple of hours, I spend them mostly in traffic jams which is exhausting, to say the least. Spring is somewhere very far from me:) |

Hi Inna
Yes, I think it's a kind of royal privilege to live in a house with a garden on the border between two towns. It's not that big neither small and easy enough to take care of and "maintain" ;-0 I would say it's almost the same as if you live on your dacha with all modern conveniences... That is a sort of escape from the madding crowd and stress of having a job in town. Now when the temperatures are back to normal +12+14 (day) I can have a cup of tea in the garden and see the first rays of rising sun, though need to wrap myself into something warm and cosy, as it's a bit chilly in the early hours:-) We used to have a dacha back in Russia and I would probably say the same what you have just told. It's nice to have it but it takes ages to get there and back. But I know that some people don't have even this..a piece of land in the countryside:- ( So, hopefully the temperatures will start rising in your place and the Spring will look after you :-) |

Mila, I'm getting envious, let's cheer me up and speak about disadvantages of living in your own house with a garden!:))) any foxes, squirrels? :) Having to be turn the heating on only once a night and just for 10 minutes in the morning? Or being really quick with having a shower to save some hot water for the rest of the family? these are my most lasting memories of living with a host family :)

Hi there then...
I am aware of what you might have went through while being "hosted" by an english family :- ( To be honest, those people who wish to host students are "a bit stingy and mean", though not all of them. As a family we don't host any foreign students, just becuase our place is too small for having extra people, wondering around :-) 1)the heating - yes, is limited, 3 hours in the morning (6-9 am) and 4 hours in the afternoon ( 4- 8 pm), when the temperatures were below freezing this winter we had to keep the heating on through the day, but not at night. 2) limited use of shower could be a problem but 10-15 minutes per person is enough or at least we got used to it (the electric power shower)and we also have a seperate heater for it, so you can have a shower when you need it. 3) squirrels, foxes - yes they do come in the garden, but we have 2 cats, so they keep wildlife at a distance:-) |

Hello to all!
This one is about some funny excuses drivers make up for not parking in right places: "UFO blamed for parking fine error Spotting a UFO and claiming colour blindness are among unusual excuses given by drivers for not paying parking fines, it has been revealed. The UFO spotter said he was so shocked by what he had seen that he drove into a bus lane, according to parking appeals made to Southwark Council in south London. Another appellant said: "I'm colour blind, so I thought the yellow line was green." P.S. Double Yellow line is for NOT parking. Red line is for NO parking at any time. |

Hi everyone!
I'm short of time to write at the moment, but I'm here now and then. About UFO's. Once after landing at one of airports ATC's asked us if we had observed an UFO during our approach. Because they had (via radar). We hadn't. But we were totally absorbed by the approach (there were IMC), and probably just looked through it. |

Hi Inna!
I quite understand the way you feel. I would probably do exactly the same, flowers and candles, if I were in Moscow. It's always very sad to think about any kind of incident not to mention crashes. My great aunt was Polish and I met quite a few Polish people. I don't put in any kind of political issue, just normal people with their ordinary lives..It's all extremely unfair towards the people, the pilots and the plane. Perhaps it will ease a bit the tension caused by certain individuals. Can't explain why but i thought about Barbara Brilska, Anna German... As for travelling it would be a bit of "adventure" all this way for me:-))The only alternative at the moment is by air, though me dream is to travel to Moscow by train so that to be able see lots of places on the way... |

Hi to all!
This is a bit rude but well true... "Why Indian Students are disliked abroad? It was the first day of a school in USA and a new Indian student named Chandrasekhar Subramanian entered the fourth grade. The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American History. Who said 'Give me Liberty , or give me Death'?" She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Chandrasekhar, who had his hand up:?'Patrick Henry, 1775'he said. 'Very good! Who said 'Government of the People, by the People, for the People, shall not perish from the Earth?'' Again, no response except from Chandrasekhar. 'Abraham Lincoln, 1863' said Chandrasekhar. The teacher snapped at the class, 'Class, you should be ashamed. Chandrasekhar, who is new to our country, knows more about our history than you do.' She heard a loud whisper: 'F ___ the Indians, ' 'Who said that?' she demanded. Chandrasekhar put his hand up. 'General Custer, 1862.' At that point, a student in the back said, 'I'm gonna puke.' The teacher glares around and asks 'All right! Now, who said that?' Again, Chandrasekhar says, 'George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991.' Now furious, another student yells, 'Oh yeah? Suck this!' Chandrasekhar jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher, 'Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky, 1997' Now with almost mob hysteria someone said 'You little shit. If you say anything else, I'll kill you.' Chandrasekhar frantically yells at the top of his voice, ' Michael Jackson to the child witnesses testifying against him, 2004.' The teacher fainted. And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, 'Oh shit, we're screwed!' And Chandrasekhar said quietly, 'I think it was Lehmann Brothers, November 4th, 2008'."... |

One messenger has posted... "We were presented with fruit and flowers (2) in a vase"...and she/he is so much surprised. BTW: it's a custom that the even number of flowers should be in a bunch. Different countries-different cultures... |

Hello, everyone!
Mila, if it’s possible today to bypass the volcano topic then I got really confused with the flower number issue. Even number of flowers should be in a bunch… Really?... In Great Britain? In which country else?... Need to be educated in this sensitive matter… :) Though IMHO it’s silly custom to observe/inspect the flower number whatever the bunch. Indeed there are too many “conditional” customs which can have “polar” interpretation by people of different cultures. Religion including… Jet flown by Captain Jane and First Officer Betty :) Jetty, I hope my updated interpretation of your nick will not disappoint you :) |

Hello avia-beauty fan,
Ver nice to "see " you:-) Yes, this is true re: the numbers : 2, 4, 6 etc and this was a real confusion for me when I was given a bunch:-)) Perhaps, some former countries of British Empire could have the same custom, not that sure, though.. I think that ordinary people can't count in odd numbers, let it put this way:-))) It's very quiet in the sky today, though. One could hear the birds singing, just the sun shining and a few grey clouds, typical for this time of the year. Nothing extraordinary... |

Good morning everyone!
Hope that your morning is good enough to feel good and do what you have to do: a day off or a day at work. I said before that I am a frequent traveller and very often have to stay in hotels. This morning, browsing through the sites, I found the article about what tourists like "borrowing" from the hotels, they stay. Apparently there are no set rules re: what to take from a room as a souvenir. However, the hotels would not strictly mind if a guest would like "to keep" the following items and, funny enough, they all begin from the letter "S" :-) * Soap * Shampoo * Shower gel * Shower cap * Sewing kit * Stationery * Shoe Shine Kits * Slippers My favourite, I must admit, is stationary - I love pens and pencils :-))) |
