Yes, we know, all the men are swines, and all the women are fool. :-) Careful while judging or labelling... I'm glad you've caught eventually that it wasn't my own opinion or generalization, but just an attempt to translate into English well known Russian proverb which briefly expresses the motive of the song. :) By the way it's difficult to imagine the things that could be farther away from me then judging or labelling. |

I am just wondering what stops you from using correct grammar in your intreprettation of a proverb or a saying... Any caprice :-) Here you are: Usually it's a carelessness, when you notice mistake already pushing "send" (correctness HAVEN'T yet affected for example). Sometimes vulgar grammar ignorance. In this particular case I used the word "fool" as an adjective and it seemed to me that it's no necessary to make a plural in such case. It's up to you to decide what exactly it was ;) |

Making some effort upon myself to replace my sincere but… “heavy” form of addressing you personally with what better fits the forum format I’m saying
Hello, Mila! The most striking attention getter for me after Courchevel airstrip exotics unexpectedly turned out to be… a non-giant turboprop “Twin Otter” in British Airways colors strongly associated before with “big” jets only :) The caption for the rest of my overloaded post is “Ideas and translations”. I’d like to share my excitement in respect to one of MANY advises that I’ve found in the book written by former M.Gorbachov interpreter Pavel Palazhchenko. Of course there never be a mistake to translate «мысль» as thought and «философия» as philosophy but look here. Such SHIFT between Russian and English notions I’ve really noticed many times in various cases! So the fine combinations suggested by the book author (and supported by the post author :) are as follows Мысль – Idea Идея – Concept Концепция – Philosophy Философия (в жизни) - (Life) Vision Next is simply mix of “topical” phrases found in Russian origins: Another idea of P. Palazhchenko: Subject of translation are the ideas (of words) rather than the words itself. This is just concoction made myself: The stages of idea distortion when interpreter is needed for “mental exchange” :)) 1. The “transmitter” puts his idea in words 2. The interpreter perceives the idea as correctly as he can 3. The interpreter puts the idea in words as perfectly as he can 4. The “receiver” perceives interpreter’s “interpretation” as diligently as he can 5. The “receiver” puts his reply idea in words 6. The interpreter perceives the reply idea as correctly as he can 7. The interpreter puts the idea in words as perfectly as he can 8. The “transmitter” perceives the receiver interpreter’s interpretation as diligently as he can… Isn’t it nightmare… :) By the way, an interesting idea about ideas was found on my colleague’s computer screensaver (English this time, no translation): Small minds discuss people. Modest minds discuss events. Great minds discuss ideas. More phrases, Russian origins again: Graceful translation is not precise one and the precise translation is not graceful (Mila, you have already proved that this is not a hard and fast rule:)). Translation… Imagine the person crossing the state border who is forcedly undressed, has his skin torn off, and dressed with ethnic clothes : ( Corrections & comments are welcome of course. May be continued about what the translation is… |

Good mornig everyone!
Hello avia-beauty fan! Rather philosophical detour in the art of translation. I wouldn't even think of going that far into the concepts of it. Your ideas of Russian- English interpretations are worth considering, though could be controversial!! There are so many people, who claim to be interpreters or translators! However I wouldn't call translation to be graceful, but rather accurate, faithful ...or perhaps you could easily find some other words that describe this act of intellectual communication more adequate and precise. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. |

Hi everyone!
The time is coming when holiday and festive seasons are just round the corner. It's Christmas time and New Year! And I believe that a famous song should get you in the right mood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v ... "Dashing through the snow In a one horse open sleigh O'er the fields we go Laughing all the way Bells on bob tails ring Making spirits bright What fun it is to laugh and sing A sleighing song tonight Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh A day or two ago I thought I'd take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot We got into a drifted bank And then we got upsot Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh yeah Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh Jingle bells, jingle bells Jingle all the way Oh, what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh |

Hello, everybody! :)
Do you still remember me? Could you help me time and again? I have a little problem with understanding the sence and, consequently, the difference between several word-combinations from Aviation English, I can't realize their meaning quite well (what it is in practice; if some of the exist or were just word-for-word translated from Russian into English; if it is possible to interchange some of them): to establish on ILS => Report established. => Report ILS established. => Report fully established; to establish on localizer? - Does it exist or not? Thanks a lot beforehand! :))) |

Hi all!
2 LarisaKLO An ILS consists of two beams (which are respectively emitted by two separate beacons). First is localaser (КРМ). It "shows" a centerline of the runway (i.e. if an aircraft is left/right or on centerline). Second is a glideslope beam (ГРМ). It shows a glideslope. In other words if an aircraft is higher or lower then desired height (alt) for certain range from a RW threshold. So it allows a pilot understand if an altitude and rate of descent are appropriate for this approach. When an aircraft aligns the centerline (usually it happens first and automatically), pilot reports: Established RW32 (for example). As a rule an aircrat maintains an appointed height (alt) at this segment of approach. Then a plane approaches to the glideslope beam ad begins to descend. So pilots reports: Fully established RW32. It means an aircraft is descending along the glideslope and ready to land. There are the landing systems that consists of only a localiser (and DME as option). In this case the report: "established localiser" is appropriate. Uhhh. I've explained so much... even understood myself after all ;-) And what about you? |

Hi MSL!
Your "approach" tutorial reminded me of my explanation of English Grammar to my students many years ago...I just started my career then in teaching and was absolutely sure that everyone should leave the classroom with certain amount of knowledge...It was so hard to keep on while the cadets were not that commited and focused on the issue. Then I said the following: " Comrade cadets, this is the point when I have just inderstood the basics. Why is it still a problem for you???" Everybody burst into laugh, including myself. Anyway, rather interesting site I've found, while searching for the answer to " How long do the cows leave" on the left side of the forum... http://www.flying-cows.com/ind ... |

I’ve really appreciated the catching quotation of Thomas Jefferson. What do you call people who are afraid of Santa Claus? - Claustrophobic /Anon/ …therefore the most horrible accessory of SC outfit is its sack :) MSL You are right indeed. My little speech might have been taken ambiguously. I was too hurry while typing. No irony. Moreover, in a hurry I typed “brief” instead of “smart”. Hello, everyone
Mila, don’t be surprised. As far as new page has already started my counter zeroed…:) Seems yesterday the Moscow forum visitors left the Hostess Lady of English Club slightly discouraged with “no echo” to simple weather matter. Just because of tutorial nature of the forum I have taken the question as a homework and now trying to describe the situation. Unlike previous years Moscow has already been undergone harsh frosts and snowfalls in December and there is hope that “white” outdoors views will prevail in coming jolly time and some Moscow monument will possibly take the same stunningly comical appearance as the British one Mila has shown. MSL LarisaKLO did get the right answer on her provoking “pressure” question meaning no “difference between” and clearly demonstrated her superiority over those who are… not destined at all, really. |
