2 Mila And Everyone - MAE :-)
Learning English i've noticed some coincidences that suggest an idea about common roots of all languages. For example house-хата, хаза, mature-матерый, complete-комплект. In other words it's not a direct loanwords but they imply some related meaning. Have you ever noticed something like that?

BTW, does MAE mean "Mean Absolute Error":-))
Yes, you are right, so keep on "digging in and out". That's something I am trying to teach my English students- to find similarities in languages. It's rather rare linguistic ability!
One - один, mother - muter -мать-матерь, sister- сестра, brother - брат-братья...

Hi Mila & Co. How weird it is that these words below have 2 types of plurals:

Cactus – cacti and cactuses
Hippopotamus – hippopotami and hippopotamuses (and 3d type is hippos, of course)

Just heard a car ad on the radio:
“We have largest selection of Lexi (?!) (plural from Lexus)”

Do you have a theory on this?

Hi boba!!
Nice one..
They are the so-called Latinate plurals for nouns of Greek origin,
or snob plurals:
cactus- cacti,
hippotamus-hippopotami/hippopotamuses

Plural form of words ending in -us

fungus fungi
terminus termini/terminuses
uterus uteri/uteruses
So, obviously Lexus -one, but lexi - are many :-)))

Thanks, yes, I think the idea is rather good - "to open windows to the world" and to see how other people leave, what do they do, think of, beleive in...
By the way, Wednesday the 30th is Russian day, a school event of the week of languages. I will be doing presentation, lesson taster sessions, dancing ...just a few to mention. We will also have Japanese introduction, Polish...
Our school canteen will be cooking Greek, Mexican, French dishes, but no Russian ;- (( (
So a lot to looking forward to :-)))

Hi, everyone!
I found it rather "romantic"...:-)))
Pilot stalked ex-girl with plane
Police have arrested a pilot who they say stalked his ex-girlfriend by repeatedly flying his plane low over her house.
Police in Concord, in northern California, say Tom Huey made several low passes over a residential neighbourhood.
Sgt. Tiffiny Leftwich told the Contra Costa Times that a dozen residents called police to complain. Huey was arrested shortly after landing the Beech single-engine aircraft.

What do you reckon??

Hi everyone!
A joke for the weekend:

"A woman takes a lover home during the day while her husband is at work.

Her 9 year old son comes home unexpectedly, sees them, and hides in the bedroom cupboard to watch. Just after getting into bed the woman's husband also comes home unexpectedly, she tells her lover to hide in the cupboard, not realising that the little boy is in there.

After a little while the little boy says, 'Dark in here.

The man, who obviously got a real fright not expecting to hear anything, let alone from a little boy says, 'Yes, it is.'

Boy - 'I have a football.'

Man - 'That's nice.'

Boy - 'Want to buy it?'

Man - 'No, thanks..'

Boy - 'My dad's outside.'

Man - 'OK, how much?'

Boy - '$ 250'

In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the lover are in the cupboard together.

Boy - 'Dark in here.'

Man - 'Yes, it is.'

Boy - 'I have football boots.'

The lover, remembering the last time, asks the boy, 'OK How much this time?'

Boy - '$ 750'

Man - 'Sold.'

A few days later, the boys' father says to the boy, 'Grab your boots and football, let's go outside and have a game of soccer.

The boy says, 'I can't, I sold my ball and boots.'

The father asks, 'How much did you sell them for and to who?'

The boy says, 'To a friend of mine for a $ 1, 000..'

The father says, 'That's a terrible thing to do, overcharging your friend like that'. 'That's four times what they cost when they were new, I'm going to take you to church and make you confess your terrible sins.'

They go to the church and the father makes the little boy sit in the confession booth and he closes the door.

The boy says, 'Dark in here'...

The priest says, 'Don't start that shit again you little prick, you're in my cupboard now'!!

In the US, as you know, football means American football. And soccer is soccer.

So, “grab your … football, let's … have a game of soccer” sounds a little odd.

But it’s a funny one.

Hi everyone!
Here is something for the weekend..

A woman was sitting at a bar enjoying an after work cocktail with her girlfriends when Steven, a tall, exceptionally handsome, extremely sexy, middle-aged man entered. He was so striking that the woman could not take her eyes off him.

This seasoned yet playful heartthrob noticed her overly attentive stare and walked directly toward her. (As any man would.) Before she could offer her apologies for staring so rudely, he leaned over and whispered to her, "I'll do anything, absolutely anything, that you want me to do, no matter how kinky, for £10.00... on one condition..."

Flabbergasted but intrigued, the woman asked what the condition was. The man replied, "You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words."

The woman considered his proposition for a moment, and then slowly removed £10 from her purse, which she pressed into the man's hand along with her address. She looked deeply and passionately into his eyes, barely concealing her anticipation and excitement, and slowly and meaningfully said....
"Clean my house."

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions, just read through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.
How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate
achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners .

Here's another quiz:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with .
Easier?

The moral: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

"Cat catches train to watch penguins"

The owners of an adventuring cat which regularly catches a train to a marine-life sanctuary to watch the fish and penguins have said it would be enjoying its new-found celebrity status.
Percy the cat has become the most famous pet in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, after it was revealed that he often leaves his home on Green Howard's Drive and travels to the Sea Life Centre by rail.
The six-year-old animal spends the day watching fish and scaring penguins before hopping back on to the miniature North Bay Railway train when it is time to go home.

Whether it's true or not....

The clocks go back in the early hours of this Sunday, 25th.

From my personal experience:
We once benefited from this many years ago when a liberal pub landlord let everyone drink for an hour longer.
We once lost out when several years back we were staying in a hotel, completely forgot about the clocks and missed our breakfast. The staff did not remind guests and then were not even prepared to make some toast when several of us turned up at 10.45am thinking it was 9.45am. This was very mean, though...
Do you have personl experience when the clock goes back...???

Noisy toddler booted off flight...

Children will be children, but one cranky two-year-old was acting too much his age for a Southwest Airlines flight crew who kicked him off a plane getting ready to leave for San Jose.
Pamela Root said she was confident her son Adam's screams of "Go! Plane! Go!" and "I want Daddy!" would subside once the plane took off in Amarillo, Texas, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
But she said the plane taxied back to the gate and the pair were escorted off.

Hi boba and everyone!
Good one re: the flight...
Too busy these days..
However, there is one I was looking for:
Here they are, the famous Seven Deadly Sins:

Pride
A too great belief in one's own abilities, that interferes
with one's recognition of the grace of God. It is sometimes
called the sin that causes all other sins. Pride is also
known as Vanity.

Envy
Discontent and a desire for another person's possessions,
qualities or luck.

Gluttony
An excessive and habitual desire to eat more than one needs.

Lust
An excessive sexual desire.

Anger
A strong feeling of displeasure or hostility, a kind of
fury. Anger is also known as Wrath.

Covetousness /Creed
A strong desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring
spiritual things.

Sloth
A reluctance to do physical or spiritual work, a very great
laziness.
Good luck to all!

Hi everyone
An inocent joke for those who are over 18+.

"First time sex "

A girl asks her boyfriend to come over Friday night to meet
and have a dinner with her parents.
Since this is such a big event, the girl announces to her boyfriend that after
dinner, she would like to go out and make love for the first time.
The boy is ecstatic, but he has never had sex before, so he takes a trip to the pharmacist to get some condoms. He tells the pharmacist it's his first time and the pharmacist helps the boy for about an hour. He tells the boy everything there is to know about condoms and sex.
At the register, the pharmacist asks the boy how many condoms he'd like to buy, a 3-pack, 10-pack, or family pack. The boy insists on the family pack because he thinks he will be rather busy, it being his first time and all.
That night, the boy shows up at the girl's parents house and meets his girlfriend at the door.
"Oh, I'm so excited for you to meet my parents, come on in!"
The boy goes inside and is taken to the dinner table where the girl's parents are seated.
The boy quickly offers to say grace and bows his head.
A minute passes, and the boy is still deep in prayer, with his head down.
10 minutes pass, and still no movement from the boy.
Finally, after 20 minutes with his head down, the girlfriend leans over
and whispers to the boyfriend,
"I had no idea you were this religious."
The boy turns, and whispers back:
"I had no idea your father was a PHARMACIST."

I think the ability to learn and speak foreign language works here as some sort of filter that cuts the mental clutter we could face on the other threads of this forum.
So the positioning of this thread is conspicuous :-)
