The Sun, British tabloid, posted an article a few days ago re: russian tourists.
"HOLIDAYING Russians are topping the league of the WORST tourists in the world." The Germans have been beaten into second place — after it was claimed Russians were money flashing chavs who hide sunloungers in their hotel rooms. The new world's worst holidaymaker poll has surveyed more than 1, 000 British tourists who went abroad this summer. ..Russian tourists were more likely to: - Take hotel sunloungers into their rooms to make sure they get a seat by the pool in the morning. - Flash their money around and order hotel staff to be at their beck and call. - Belch and swear in public areas such as hotel swimming pools and bars. - And dress like 'chavs' — wearing tracksuits and gold bling. Prison meal" better than NHS (National Health Sysytem)hospital" "People are far more likely to go hungry in an NHS hospital than in a prison, researchers from Bournemouth University have said. This is despite prisons spending less per person on meals than hospitals do. Hi everyone.
A bit of fun for Friday night... A mother passing by her son's bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made, and everything was picked up. Then, she saw an envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow. It was addressed, 'Mum'. With the worst premonition, she opened the envelope and read the letter, with trembling hands. "Dear, Mum. It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend, because I wanted to avoid a scene with Dad and you. I've been finding real passion with Stacy, and she is so nice, but I knew you would not approve of her, because of all her piercings, tattoos, her tight Motorcycle clothes, and because she is so much older than I am. But it's not only the passion, Mum. She's pregnant.Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods, and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves, and trading it with the other people in the commune, for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS, so Stacy can get better. She sure deserves it!! Don't worry Mum, I'm 15, and I know how to take care of myself. Someday, I'm sure we'll be back to visit, so you can get to know your many grandchildren. Love, your son, Nicholas. PS: Mum, none of the above is true. I'm over at Jason's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the school report that's on my desk. I love you! Call when it is safe for me to come home |

Hi 2x2!
Thank you very much for your comments re: this thread, I really appreciate it. I would like to welcome you here and may I wish, from the bottom of my heart, that you would probably make a bit of difference to your English, as they say "Taste the difference" in one of the supermarkets:-))) Firstly, you do not need to do much, just post everything you think is interesting to you and to other readers. Secondly, you could make some progress without actually noticing it, through self correction and lack of hesitation : Am I right? What if? etc...We all make mistakes and this is OK, as it is just our human nature. Thirdly, I will try to come back as often as I could, although I am quite busy right now, and post some useful comments on Grammar, Vocabulary, not to mention jokes, songs, stories... So, do feel free to ask anything, but personal matters, and we all, who "settle down=touch down" here, will make learning English an exciting and purposeful timebeing- which I believe is the key to confidence!! So see you soon! |

Hello, everybody! :)
Special respect for the author! :))) I would like to ask you - if you are real specialists in aviation English or radiotelephony communication for pilots - a little question: Is it possible (undoubtedly, I mean in real practicde) to answer IDENTING (when you are asked by the controller to SQUAWK IDENT). As for the grammar - the verb is SQUAWK, while IDENT is a noun, but what about real situations? |

Here we are again.
Sometimes it's rather confusing for us, non-native speakers to use some verbs correctly. The verbs are Regular and Irregular. They either change their forms in Past as in land-landED approach-approchED and that's why these verbs are REGULAR, Or *without any change at all hurt-hurt put-put *with some changes begin-began-begun run-ran-run LAST TWO GROUPS are called IRREGULAR. There are about 200 Irregular verbs in English and they should be learnt to remember once and forever :-))) |

However, WHICH is used whne there is a choice WHAT is used, when there is no limit to the number of choices: * WHAT would you like in your sandwiches? I've got cheese or tuna. WHICH would you prefer? * He comes from Glasgow, but do you know which football team he supports? ~ I think it's Celtic, but it may be Rangers. I'm not sure. Hi, anybody?..
Anyway, the number of visitors=readers is "non- stop" :-))), it means there are some people who pop in just in case to find something. So this is for those who wish to read: 7 Times of the Day Here are 7 important times or parts of the day in English. -- MIDNIGHT This is the middle of the night (00:00 hours). MIDDAY This is the middle of the day, also called "NOON" (12:00 hours). -- MORNING This is the time from midnight to midday. AFTERNOON This is the time from midday (noon) to evening. From 12:00 hours to approximately 18:00 hours. EVENING This is the time from the end of the afternoon to midnight. From approximately 18:00 hours to 00:00 hours. -- DAWN This is the time when the sun rises or comes up (sunrise). DUSK This is the time when the sun sets or goes down (sunset). Enjoy!!! |

Thanks, boba...We have those as well :-)))
There are 24 hours in a day. The day is divided into "day (time)" and "night (-time)". Daytime is from sunrise (this varies, but we can say approximately 6am) to sunset (we can say approximately 6pm). Night-time is from sunset to sunrise. Every day starts precisely at midnight. AM (Ante-Meridiem = before noon) starts just after midnight. PM (Post-Meridiem=after noon) starts just after midday. This means that 12am and 12pm have no meaning. The word day can have two meanings: 1. the 24 hours between one midnight and the next 2. the time between sunrise and sunset (as distinct from night) |

Hi Mila and everyone!
I have a question. There is the famous song by Pink Floyd - We don't need no education http://www.youtube.com/watch?v ... That should be translated as: "Нам не нужно образование", as far as I understand. But I can't catch why there is a double negation in the title of the song. If I had to translate the sentence "Нам не нужно образование" into English I would say: "We don't need AN education". What's the matter? What am I missing? |

Hi MSL!
Thanks for another tricky bit...the so-called double negation. The double-negatives-make-a-positive rule was first introduced in England in 1762. 1. Double negatives are generally not used in written varieties of Standard English. However, if there is very heavy stress on "do not" Standard English can use the form "I do not want nothing" as a way of emphasizing that the speaker would rather have "something" than "nothing" at all. So in case We don't need no education We don't need no thought control it's obviously quite the opposite, meaning we need some sort of Education and Control. Mind you it's also a very popular quote from famous song.... Today, the double negative is often considered the mark of an uneducated speaker, but it is used to be quite common in English, even in literature. "I ain't done nothing"- very typical nowadays ... |

Mila!
Thanks for your explanation! Though it's pretty tricky as well :-) As far as I understand your point is: minus plus minus equals plus? It's well known rule of the maths and the formal logic. So the meaning of the lyrics is: Мы не хотим остаться без образования, Мы не хотим мыслить бесконтрольно? Right? But then how should I take the words "Hey teacher leave that kids alone"? |

Hi boba, MSL!
Yes, you're right, adding the words: "Hey! Teacher! Leave us kids alone!’ It is a strong possibility of double effect, i.e. "-", when children, luckily not all of them, don't want to learn anything and just want every lesson to be fun.. Although it's rather wrong = bizzare in Standard English. By the way, old fashioned English people would hardly accept the word "kids", as they say "It's an American word. We British use children instead!" :-))) |

Well, boba, don't know really what to say..
It looks as if you're talking about some sort of prehistoric origin of Slavic/Russian bread ( Ukranian: коровай, Polish: korowaj, English: korovai ) and a herb, "Caraway"or Persian cumin (Carum carvi) which was also used as one of the ingredients for making bread as well as other stuff. What do you think people?? Is there some sort of connection or simply coinsidence and the circumstances??? |
