Oh, yes..Every time I come back to Russia I am expecting something:-)))
The weather was too kind, even hot +35 in the Middle Volga area. So it was worth travelling all this way down from cold and wet UK...The train service was great fun. They issue you with a pair of red slippers, clean toilets and hot meal from the restaurant, cooked on the premises!! Watched a lot of TV...The prices on some goods and food are shocking!!! The mini vans " marshrutki" are all driven by "comicadze" drivers!!! I was lucky enough to avoid using them...Now need some time the whole lot of being "digested":-))) |

To MSL:
Vacations, holidays - pl. Spend...больше относится к "материальным вещам"...Spend money, spend gas, spend food... Обычно, spend time...подразумевает..waste time...spend time with bore... ИМХО, "spent vacations" на "мое ухо звучит"..."потраченный зря, скучный отпуск". |

VOC:
TO SPEND A PENNY UK OLD-FASHIONED POLITE EXPRESSION FOR to urinate: If you'll excuse me, I need to spend a penny. SPEND TIME I think we need to spend more time together. I spent a lot of time cleaning that room. I've spent years building up my collection. I spent an hour at the station waiting for the train. How long do you spend on your homework? My sister always spends ages in the bathroom. We spent the weekend in London. You can spend the night here if you like. SPEND MONEY How much did you spend? I don't know how I managed to spend so much in the pub last night. We spent a fortune when we were in New York. She spends a lot of money on clothes. We've just spent £1.9 million on improving our computer network. We went on a spending spree (= We bought a lot of things) on Saturday. |

It wasn't my own invention. Dictionary writes:
spend[spend] гл.; прош. вр., прич. прош. вр. spent 1) тратить, расходовать (на что-л.) to spend money on smth. — тратить деньги на что-л. Syn: expend 2) проводить (время) He spent a weekend in London. — Выходные он провёл в Лондоне. She spends her spare time gardening. — В свободное время она работает в саду. How do you spend your leisure? — Как вы проводите свой досуг? |

Hi MSL!
I understand that you can find Primary meaning of any word in a dictionary. And I agree!!! You are doing the very right thing- looking up a word in a dictionary. The problem starts, when ordinary people -native speakers- alter it in the way they think it would be useful. Thus creating difficulties for us-non native speakers. And another factor, affecting any language- is time. Any language is live and and is changing... I would never be 100% sure in anything, myself. That's why when I hear something, that sounds unusual, I always do one rather annoying thing: start asking people, colleages, friends etc...Very often they can't explain themselves!!! They just say it this way!!! So, lets' move on:-))) |

On the left side there is a forum " Which airline do you like and why?"
Here is one of those An award should go to the Virgin Airlines desk attendant in Sydney some months ago for being smart and funny, while making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo. A crowded Virgin flight was cancelled after Virgin's 767s had been withdrawn from service. A single attendant was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travelers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, 'I HAVE to be on this flight and it HAS to be FIRST CLASS'. The attendant replied, 'I'm sorry, sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these people first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out...' The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, 'DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?' Without hesitating, the attendant smiled and grabbed her public address microphone: 'May I have your attention please, may I have your attention please, ' she began - her voice heard clearly throughout the terminal.. 'We have a passenger here at Desk 14 WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to Desk 14.' With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the Virgin attendant, gritted his teeth and said, 'F.... You!' Without flinching, she smiled and said, 'I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to get in line for that too. |

a bit of GRAMMAR
so - such You can use 'so' with an adjective or an adverb. e.g. The disco was so hot! She danced so beautifully You can use 'such' with an uncountable noun [U] (and adjective) or with a plural countable noun [C] (and adjective) You can use 'such a' or 'such an' with a singular countable noun [C] (and adjective) e.g. Such ideas are hard to understand. It was such a long journey that it took a day to get over it. You can say 'so much' [U], 'such many' [C - plural] and 'such a lot (of)' [U] or [C] e.g. There was so much traffic and such a lot of people that everything came to a standstill! With comparatives, you can use 'so much' e.g. so much quicker |

A very famous phrase in English is "the seven seas". Many
song and poems refer to "sailing the seven seas" to express the idea of roaming the whole world by sea. But what are the seven seas? Today, the seven seas are generally considered to be the: - Arctic Ocean - Antarctic Ocean - Indian Ocean - North Pacific Ocean - South Pacific Ocean - North Atlantic Ocean - South Atlantic Ocean So why are the seven seas in fact "oceans"? Well, ocean simply means a very large sea. Any ideas?? |
