Quiet time X
it has been a very busy week, the sun has shone all week but
i feel as if I've not had chance to lift my head to look at the sky
really, really looking forward to the weekend, keeping fingers tightly crossed that
the forecast of rain doesn't come true...

Hi everyone!!Still quiet time here..
Anyway, this is something I have found today...
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was supposed to have taken off by now, but will remain grounded due to a problem predicting how the lightweight plane will respond to flight stress.
Boeing said it delayed the test flight to reinforce an area within the side-of-body section of the aircraft. Boeing has not given a new target date for the test flight. The fix itself is inexpensive and raises no other concerns about the aircraft, the company said.
Customers with Dreamliner orders were disappointed by the latest delay. And experts wondered if cancellations might follow. Such a turn of events could take a toll on the company, which already has suffered its share of bad luck.
"We have been anticipating the 787 delivery, so it really is disappointing if our delivery schedule will be pushed back, " said a spokesman for Japan Airlines Corp on Tuesday.
So far this year, Boeing has logged only nine net orders as global economic weakness has spurred a string of cancellations, including 58 Dreamliner orders.

This is an advert from Air New Zealand. The cabin crew's uniforms are nothing but body paint.

Hi everyone
This post is a tricky one, as it's all about men's rules...I guess you 'll get it right ;-)))

The Man Rules
Please note.. these are all numbered "1 "
ON PURPOSE!

1. Men are NOT mind readers.

1. Learn to work the toilet seat.
You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down.
We need it up, you need it down.
You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports It's like the full moon
or the changing of the tides.
Let it be.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want.
Let us be clear on this one:
Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That's what we do.
Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument.
In fact, all comments become Null and void after 7 Days.

1. If you think you're fat, you probably are.
Don't ask us.

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one

1. You can either ask us to do something
Or tell us how you want it done.
Not both.
If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials..

1. Christopher Columbus did NOT need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings.
Peach, for example, is a fruit, not A color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched.
We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing, " We will act like nothing's wrong.
We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, Expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine.... Really .

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as baseball
or golf.

1. You have enough clothes..

1.. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape. Round IS a shape!

1. Thank you for reading this.
Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight;

But did you know men really don't mind that? It's like camping.

Pass this to as many men as you can -
to give them a laugh.

Pass this to as many women as you can -

to give them a bigger laugh.

Hi!
Just an update on proverbs

"You can't tell a book by its cover."

We need to read a book to know if it's good or bad. We
cannot know what it's like just by looking at the front or
back cover. This proverb is applied to everything, not only
books.

--

"Where there's a will there's a way."

If we have the determination (the will) to do something, we
can always find the path or method to do it.

--

"Don't cross your bridges before you come to them."

Don't worry about problems before they arrive.

--

"It was the last straw that broke the camel's back."

There is a limit to everything. We can load the camel with
lots of straw, but finally it will be too much and the
camel's back will break. And it is only a single straw that
breaks its back - the last straw. This can be applied to
many things in life. People often say "That's the last
straw!" when they will not accept any more of something.

--

"Bad news travels fast."

"Bad news" means news about "bad" things like accidents,
death, illness etc. People tend to tell this type of news
quickly. But "good news" (passing an exam, winning some
money, getting a job etc) travels more slowly.

--

"You can't take it with you when you die."

When we die we leave everything on earth. We don't take
anything with us. Even the richest people cannot take their
money with them after death. This proverb reminds us that
some material things are not really so valuable as we think.

--

"Still waters run deep."

Some rivers have rough surfaces with waves. That's usually
because the water is shallow and there are rocks near the
surface. But deep rivers have no rocks near the surface and
the water is smooth and still. This proverb means that
people who are calm and quiet on the outside, often have
a strong, "deep" personality inside.

Hi guys!!
Nice to hear from you all and hello to Rookie! And many thanks for all your compliments, appreciated.
I am finally on my holiday!!!! Just a few days to catch my breath and then I am flying to Moscow in a week time. So I would like to hope that this forum will go on...
Our main and common mistake is our FEAR...What if I am wrong/ What if I make mistakes and so on ...
If we don't make mistakes how on earth we are going to learn ANYTHING!!!
So, thanks to MSL and Mechanic- you are 100% right- do your very first steps and nobody would laugh at you or, even worse, tell you off- we are all the same-human beings :-)))
2 Rookie.
I do not agree with you that this forum is not quite right for you, as you are doing your first steps in English. This should be YOUR forum and for you as well as many other students who are struggling through the rough ocean named "English".
Please do read and write even short messages and you will notice that your confudence is getting stronger!

A bit of secrets in pronunciation

-ed Pronunciation

Try and pronounce the words with -ed. You might hear the following /t/, /d/ or /id/ after each of these -ed verbs:

Example: worked /t/

1) played

2) added

3) delivered

4) wanted

5) washed

6) landed

7) liked

Now check your answers:

Word -ed Pronunciation
1 played /d/
2 added /Id/
3 delivered /d/
4 wanted /Id/
5 washed /t/
6 landed /Id/
7 liked /t/

GRAMMAR
As with modern tendency to simplify English you would often use Will rather than Shall..
In the sentences:
I SHALL fly to Moscow / We SHALL fly to Moscow -which are perfectly correct but not quite modern enough.
I WILL fly to Moscow/ We will fly to Moscow - is a more modern way of saying commonly nowadays.
More about shall and will you can find on the site...just type English Grammar...

Good morning everyone!!
Rookie, you've done great- your first sentence in English!!
Paul, welcome back!

Now let's see and play a bit with Rookie's sentence, as it's too good to show all possible tricky bits of grammar.
I suggest that we could play with it and create a list of possibilities...
1.The starting point:
As I HAVE noticed- можно употребить в качестве начальной фразы, если есть непосредственное соотношение с конкретным случаем, как правило единичным...
Когда же речь идёт об общем умазаключении, как правило, из личных наблюдений, из опыта и т.д....лучше сказать в начале
As far as I can/could see
The point is...
The thing is...

Let's find some more variants, shall we?......

2. The main body of the quatation:
THE MORE....THE BETTER
THE LESS.... THE WORSE...
THE OLDER...THE YOUNGER
THE UGLIER...THE NICER...bettter than more nice
......

A bit of fun ....
24 hours to live...

Morris returns from the doctor and tells his wife that the doctor has told him that he has only 24 hours to live.

Given the prognosis, Morris asks his wife for sex.
Naturally, she agrees, so they make love.

About 6 hours later, the husband goes to his wife and says,
"Honey, you know I now have only 18 hours to live.
Could we please do it one more time?"
Of course, the wife agrees, and they do it again.

Later, as the man gets into bed, he looks at his watch and realizes that he now has only 8 hours left..
He touches his wife's shoulder and asks,
"Honey, please.... just one more time before I die."
She says, "Of course, Dear, " and they make love for the third time.

After this session, the wife rolls over and falls to sleep.
Morris, however, worried about his impending death, tosses and turns, until he's down to 4 more hours.
He taps his wife, who rouses. "Honey, I have only 4 more hours.
Do you think we could..."

At this point the wife sits up and says, "Listen Morris,
I have to get up in the morning... you don't."

Hi everyone!
To Mechanic
Thanks for your comments.
This is a funny story about the condition of an old man...So the authur wants to focus on the plot itself, as if you are watching a sort of an episode, rather than just reading this joke...Very often it's possible to stick to just one Tense to show the process:-)))So grammar is not that precise, the plot is exicting...you are expecting what will happen next..However I would rather be very careful with telling a story of my own, as I might simply start thinking about what is right and what isn't, obviously, as I am not a native speaker...The same probably would refer to us, when we tell each other our anecdotes, where grammar as well as vocabulary are rather informal and flexible...
