A friend of ours from Philadelphia sent this to us. It's really worth viewing.

The guy flying the 3 kites is in his 80s, and he's from Canada. He comes to the Washington State International Kite Festival every year. His skin is like leather as he normally flies with his shirt off. He is deaf, so when he flies we hold our hands up and wave them for applause. He flies 2 with his hands and the 3rd one is attached to his waist. Enjoy!

Watch to the end to see the amazing landing of that last kite! The music is the Flower Duet from the Leo Delibes' opera, Lakmé, which is totally in synch with the soaring kites. This is the same music that has been used by British Airways for years in their TV spots.

Beautiful. Enjoy!

This morning I lucked out and was able to buy several cases of ammo. On the way home I stopped at the gas station and this drop dead gorgeous blond was filling up her car at the next pump.
She looked at the ammo in the back of my car and said in a very sexy voice: "I'm a believer in barter, big boy. Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?"
I thought it over for a few seconds and responded......"OK, what kind of ammo do you have?"

So the summer has passed
Cast away as a sluff
It is warm in the gust
It just isn’t enough

Like two leaves in my palms
Life did not give me half
All that could came to pass
It just isn’t enough

Both in evil and good
All my choices weren’t tough
It burnt right through the wood
It just isn’t enough

Took me under the wing
Life was not playing rough
I was lucky in things
It just isn’t enough

Leaves are still on the truss
And the branches unscuffed
Day is clean as a glass
It just isn’t enough

Every so often, usually in the vast deserts of the American Southwest, a hiker or a backpacker will run across something puzzling: a ginormous concrete arrow, as much as seventy feet in length, just sitting in the middle of scrub-covered nowhere. What are these giant arrows? Some kind of surveying mark? Landing beacons for flying saucers? Earth’s turn signals? No, it's…

The Transcontinental Air Mail Route
A re-creation of a 1920s map showing the route of airmail planes; the dots are intermediate stops along the course.

On August 20, 1920, the United States opened its first coast-to-coast airmail delivery route, just 60 years after the Pony Express closed up shop. There were no good aviation charts in those days, so pilots had to eyeball their way across the country using landmarks. This meant that flying in bad weather was difficult, and night flying was just about impossible.

The Postal Service solved the problem with the world’s first ground-based civilian navigation system: a series of lit beacons that would extend from New York to San Francisco. Every ten miles, pilots would pass a bright yellow concrete arrow. Each arrow would be surmounted by a 51-foot steel tower and lit by a million-candlepower rotating beacon. (A generator shed at the tail of each arrow powered the beacon). Now mail could get from the Atlantic to the Pacific not in a matter of weeks, but in just 30 hours or so.

Even the dumbest of air mail pilots, it seems, could follow a series of bright yellow arrows straight out of a Tex Avery cartoon. By 1924, just a year after Congress funded it, the line of giant concrete markers stretched from Rock Springs, Wyoming to Cleveland, Ohio. The next summer, it reached all the way to New York, and by 1929 it spanned the continent uninterrupted, the envy of postal systems worldwide.

Radio and radar are, of course, infinitely less cool than a concrete Yellow Brick Road from sea to shining sea, but I think we all know how this story ends. New advances in communication and navigation technology made the big arrows obsolete, and the Commerce Department decommissioned the beacons in the 1940s. The steel towers were torn down and went to the war effort. But the hundreds of arrows remain. Their yellow paint is gone, their concrete cracks a little more with every winter frost, and no one crosses their path much, except for coyotes and tumbleweeds. But they’re still out there.

Will as a modal also has a number of different meanings:
habitual:
-He will stay there
mean that he frequently stays there (here the word will is usually stressed somewhat, and often expresses annoyance, and even irritation).
strong probability with present time reference, as in
-That will be Mary at the door.

It can be used to give an order, as in
-You will do it right now
I would reckon that this is less relevant to ICAO proficiency level 4 as knowledge to this extend assumes a bit more profound one in advanced English Grammar.

Mila Love:

So? There is nothing about "mandatory" meaning. I have read a lot of similar things. Looks like when I see or hear "will" in the rule, it's literally my good will to comply with it or not.

It might sound as a threat
It might sound as just grammar illiteracy
It might be just too emotional

a few to mention
but it's not an obligation...

BTW Could you possibly give me some examples, i.e. your personal experience (radiotelephony)?

At least that's what I understand from my basic English knowledge. And this is definitely meant for people with basic English, not just native speakers. If they wanted to convey a message to me that this particular rule was mandatory, they should have used stronger words like "shall", "should" and best of all - "must".

By the way your English doesn't "sound" as basic one:-) and this is well true.
Secondly, native speakers can alternate grammar rules in informal situations. However the best way to comply with regulations is to read official ICAO documentation and manuals in English, and this should be mandatory..;-)))
So to be able to fly safely you must read in English all relevant documentation and practice radiotelephony ...

-----------------------------------------------------
That's exactly right. "Shall" and "must" are imperatives, "should" is just a soft, polite version of "shall". "Will" is much closer to "may". But Mila is right - it's just a common English, the recommended phraseology could be slightly different.
